The scintillating Taj Mahal, situated in Agra, India, is a wondrous gift to the entire world that represents the beautiful essence of love. Surrounded by four lush green gardens with watercourse and a pool in the middle, the main construction of Taj can simply be depicted as poetry in stone. Within this magnificent mausoleum built in 17th century by Mughal emperor Shahjahaan, is the grave of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal with nearly 99 names of God emblazoned on it. The flowery motifs on the walls and the jaali work on windows provide an out of this world view.

When is Taj Mahal Closed? 

Taj is open to the visitors from 6 a.m. in the morning till 7 p.m. in the evening. If you are planning to visit the city of erstwhile mughal empire, nawabs and poetry, Agra, then this is a historical splendour not to be missed. Visiting Agra is synonymous to viewing Taj Mahal. But, before you plan your itinerary, there are few basic things you should know. Also, you must be having this question in mind “When is Taj Mahal closed for the visitors?” Well the answer is Fridays. 
The timings of visiting the Taj Mahal are set by the Archeological Survey of India. The Taj is opened all days of the week except for Fridays. On Fridays, it is opened in the afternoon only for those who have to attend prayers at the Taj Mosque. The visit timings are from sunrise to sunset. Tickets are available throughout the day from the western and eastern gate, and at the southern gate tickets are available from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The tourists can spend any number of hours from sunrise to sunset inside the Taj complex.

Taj Mahal especially looks dazzling and glittering on moonlit nights; and of late it has been unlocked for night visiting too. For this, one needs special passes which are to be obtained at least 24 hours in advance. Night viewing is allowed, from 8:30 PM to 12:30 AM, only on five nights in a month: one, on the full moon night, two days before it and two days after it, except for Fridays. However, night viewing is limited to maximum 400 people per night, divided into eight batches of 50 each and each batch is allowed to visit for a maximum duration of 30 minutes. The special passes for night viewing are available at the booking counter located in the office of the Archeological Survey of India, Agra Circle, 22 The Mall, Agra, Uttar Pradesh in between 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Preserving the National Heritage

One should also be aware of the fact that petrol and diesel vehicles are not allowed near the monument to save the gem from any kind of pollution hazards.  One can enjoy an awesome ride on horse-driven tonga or a battery run rickshaw. The battery operated buses are also available which drive the visitors near the entrance of the Taj Mahal. No food items or other goodies are allowed to be taken inside. The basic guidelines and important information helps in making your visit to the monument a pleasant one.

Travelling Routes

The Taj Mahal is approximately 220 kilometres from the capital Delhi and is well linked by air, rail and road. It does not take more than half an hour to arrive at Taj Mahal, Agra if you are travelling by air from Delhi Airport. By train it takes nearly one and a half hour and if you are commuting by road you can reach the city of Taj Mahal in just about two hours via famous Yamuna Express Way. To be honest, road transport and the rails are the most excellent and finest ways to get a feel of the rich heritage of India.

Best Months to Visit

Taj Mahal is open for public all through the year. However, the best months to plan your trip to Taj is between November to March, when the weather is pleasant and it is easy to roam around in the day.
